Cancer Chronicles Thirteen

We pulled into the oncology center for my wife’s last visit. I told her to keep watch as I went inside. When she saw me run out with the bag of money, she was supposed to lean over, put the key in the ignition to start the engine. Once I jumped in the car we would burn rubber.
Actually, I was going in to retrieve a wheelchair to roll her inside. The other story was more exciting, like Bonnie and Clyde, but we were anticipating for a better outcome than the infamous Depression-era banker robbers.
Next week is her mastectomy. After the surgery, she begins radiation treatment. Who knows how long that will last or if anything else will follow.
It reminds me of a speech made by Winston Churchill during World War II, probably after D-Day. He said this was not the light at the end of the tunnel. It was not even the beginning of the end. It was, perhaps, the end of the beginning.
